A husband and wife, a long way from home
Arora Honey Bee is a husband-and-wife operation. They are originally from South Africa. He has kept bees since 2009, and the company has been running under its own name since 2019.
The hives live out on the North Dakota prairie around Halliday. They get moved on a flatbed at night, when every bee is home, and set back down wherever the season is running — grass, blossom, whatever is in flower.
Everything in a jar comes off those frames. It is filled, labeled and carried to a market table by the same two people who pulled it.

The work
Boxes, trucks,
and a lot of night
Hives get lifted by forklift onto a flatbed, strapped down and driven to the next yard in the dark. It is the least glamorous part of honey and it is most of the job.
